Israeli Negotiator: Hamas Commander Was Assassinated Hours After Receiving Truce Deal from Israel

Israel broke an informal ceasefire on Wednesday by assassinating Hamas military commander Ahmed Jabari in an air strike. The Israeli peace activist Gershon Baskin, who helped mediate talks between Israel and Hamas in the deal to release Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, has revealed Jabari was assassinated just hours after he received the draft of a permanent truce agreement with Israel, which included mechanisms for maintaining the ceasefire. Baskin, the founder of the Israel/Palestine Center for Research and Information, joins us from Jerusalem. We also speak with Palestinian journalist Mohammed Omer based in Gaza.

You'll see.

It's been my experience that non-pro-Israel threads do not last long.

because they were from rightwing sources the second was posted minutes after the first was locked, one this morning presumably because it was a Meta thread not I/P and would have been locked in any event, now the most recent one was IMO a bad hide, it was the same vid as the first 2 but from a not rightwing source and really I do not understand it

The last one I can remember that was locked that was "non-pro-Israel" was the poster who wanted to discuss his advocating for the destruction of Israel..I am sorry, "decertification."

The last hide was pure bullshit, (ETA) on that, at least we can agree.

Israel, Palestinians put lid on Gaza, for now TEL AVIV/GAZA | Tue Nov 13, 2012 3:58pm GMT

Ismail Haniyeh, prime minister of Gaza's Hamas government, praised the main armed factions in the enclave for agreeing on Monday night to a truce.

"They showed a high sense of responsibility by saying they would respect calm should the Israeli occupation also abide by it," he said.

Haniyeh spoke during an unannounced visit to a hospital to see wounded Palestinians. Some Israeli leaders say it is time to resume the controversial tactic of assassinating Hamas leaders.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu consulted his inner circle of ministers in Jerusalem. One of them, Benny Begin, said the flare-up had subsided but the conflict was far from resolved.

Ahead of Election & After Extrajudicial Killing Breaks Truce, Israel Prepares to Bombard Gaza

Violence had been mounting for days, but Reuters reported on November 13, “Israel and the Palestinians stepped back from the brink of a new war in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, sending signals to each other via Egypt that they would hold their fire unless attacked.” The prime minister of Gaza’s Hamas government, Ismail Haniyeh, “praised the main armed factions in the enclave for agreeing on Monday night to a truce.” Haniyeh said, “They showed a high sense of responsibility by saying they would respect calm should the Israeli occupation also abide by it.”

A day later, Israel extrajudicially killed Jabari.

It's all an excuse to kill the Palestinians and grab the land the land they, used to not want.

This is an incredible abuse of human rights.. Sick and wrong.

What hospitals they do have are overflowing. Medical supplies are nearly nonexistent to start with. They need medicines and medical supplies. It's a humanitarian disaster.

Israeli peace activist: Hamas leader Jabari killed amid talks on long-term truce

Gershon Baskin, who helped mediate between Israel and Hamas in the deal to release Gilad Shalit, says Israel made a mistake that will cost the lives of 'innocent people on both sides.'

By Nir Hasson
Nov.15, 2012

Hours before Hamas strongman Ahmed Jabari was assassinated, he received the draft of a permanent truce agreement with Israel, which included mechanisms for maintaining the cease-fire in the case of a flare-up between Israel and the factions in the Gaza Strip. This, according to Israeli peace activist Gershon Baskin, who helped mediate between Israel and Hamas in the deal to release Gilad Shalit and has since then maintained a relationship with Hamas leaders.

Baskin told Haaretz on Thursday that senior officials in Israel knew about his contacts with Hamas and Egyptian intelligence aimed at formulating the permanent truce, but nevertheless approved the assassination.

“I think that they have made a strategic mistake," Baskin said, an error "which will cost the lives of quite a number of innocent people on both sides."

"This blood could have been spared. Those who made the decision must be judged by the voters, but to my regret they will get more votes because of this,” he added.
