More than 17,000 people have marched on the German city of Dresden protesting the Islamification of Europe as a wave of xenophobia sweeps the country.
Supports of Pegida a growing group calling itself the Patriotic Europeans against the Islamification of the West filled the citys historic square singing Christmas carols and waving German flags on Monday.
Its leaders have been dismissed as Nazis in pinstripes and the groups rise has coincided with arson attacks on refugee hostels and the daubing of swastikas on city walls, but the controversy has not dissuaded supporters.
We are the people, a post on the groups Facebook page proclaimed after Mondays protest, claiming a record attendance of more than 20,000 people.

Europeans were so accustomed to their homogeneous societies that when they started getting vast influxes of people who didn't look like them, act like them or worship like them, that they had a rough time of it.
They never minded a "few" others--they liked to tout their "tolerant" bona fides and suggest that they did it better than those awful Americans with their race riots and messiness and demonstrations and marches.
Now, they're starting to realize that they don't have their shit together. It's an interesting thing to see. I think they'll probably go further to the right before they realize that this is a big world and it's getting smaller and more mingled.
It's not just Germany, either. Other nations in the region have their own wingnut parties that are gaining ascendance.

(90,061 posts)You get enough immigrants or "outsiders" coming in and you will also get enraged locals who don't want to deal with it. "Get off my lawn!" People don't like change. Only in places where people grow up dealing with people who look different and have different customs does that rule not hold, and even then it is no slam dunk if change is too rapid. And we are in a period of rapid global change.

A German undercover journalist has been sacked for giving an interview to a rival TV network while posing as an anti-Islam demonstrator during a far-right protest.
Felix Reichstein, a reporter with the private RTL broadcaster, was mingling with far-right militants at a 15,000 -strong demonstration in Dresden last week, when a fellow journalist stopped him to ask for a comment on the perceived Islamisation of Germany.
The journalist, who did not identify himself, stayed in character during the interview, saying: "When you go out, there really are a lot of Turks.
"I get on with many of them fine, but it comes to the point where you think 'are we really still German in Germany?" Reichstein continued, according to The Local.
