Nuclear Disarmament: The World's Ultimate Quest

http://english.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13940516000858

TEHRAN (FNA)- The United States and its NATO allies claim they have a long-standing commitment to an active policy in arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation. But when it comes to their own world-ending arsenals, they refuse to take the road to nuclear disarmament.

Nuclear Disarmament: The World's Ultimate Quest
Fri Aug 07, 2015 11:47

As maintained by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif: “One of the many ironies of history is that non-nuclear-weapon states, like Iran, have actually done far more for the cause of non-proliferation in practice than nuclear-weapon states have done on paper…”

Strange enough, the US-NATO alliance is desperate to keep Iran from allegedly “developing nuclear weapons,” while they themselves spend billions of dollars every year to upgrade their nuclear arsenals. The hypocrisy of the P5+1 nations, which control almost all of the weapons on the planet, was on full display during negotiations with Iran - a non-nuclear-weapon state.

So far, the US and other nuclear-armed states have also refused to advance the cause of nuclear disarmament through the Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. The meeting, which is held every five years, is supposed to strengthen international efforts to contain nuclear weapons. Instead, it is a reminder of the deep divisions over the future of nuclear weapons and what efforts should be made to eliminate them.

This year’s conference collapsed without the members formally agreeing on a plan of action. All decisions must be made by consensus, and the US, Britain and Canada rejected the final communiqué. One reason for the failure is a dispute between Muslim states and Israel, which is backed by the US, over banning nuclear weapons in the Middle East.
