Huntsville schoolteachers got some welcomed news that the school system will provide up to $350 each

for classroom supplies (editorial)

By John Peck, The Huntsville Times

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama _ School parents across Alabama have become all-too familiar with growing lists of required supplies for their kid's classroom - expenses that were once covered by the school budget.

Teachers often must use their own money to buy essentials and extras that can help the learning experience.

Huntsville schoolteachers will soon get some relief from those out-of-pocket expenses.

Schools Superintendent Casey Wardynski announced that beginning in January, the district will give up to $350 to each of its teachers for expenditures related to their classrooms.

That can go a long way in buying teaching supplements like globes, maps, lesson plan ideas and software for online reading and math programs.

supplement. 5 years later, that was cut to $500. 5 years after that, was converted to a Staples card worth $275. 2 years ago, that was eliminated, and we now receive nothing. In addition, there are no raises and no step increases for teachers or principals for the next two years, although the superintendent and the chief of staff both got $14,000 raises.
