To the editor:

This letter is in response to the Nov. 26 editorial in The Daily News headlined, “Union tussle takes bite out of Twinkies.”

I am the branch president of the Union Branch 3984 of the National Association of Letter Carriers in Jacksonville and I am proud to be a union member and workers’ advocate.

The editorial stated that “a union strike is the demise of the Twinkie and other Hostess products.” The truth is: Hostess failed and had to file for bankruptcy due to bad management — not because of its workers.

The editorial went on to say that Hostess had asked union workers to take an 8 percent pay cut as part of a restructuring aimed at saving the company and the union refused. That is partly true; however, concessions asked of union workers reached between 27 percent to 32 percent of overall compensation, which included pay cuts as well as increases in health-benefits costs.
