(Article)Groceries become a guy thing

Yogurt for men is radically different from the yogurt women buy: The label is black.

Food makers, including giants Kraft Foods Group Inc. KRFT -0.20% and General Mills Inc., GIS +0.24% eager for any potential new sales, are trying to win over men. Research indicates men are doing a greater share of the grocery shopping and meal preparation.

In a June survey of 900 meat-eating men ages 18 to 64, 47% were deemed "manfluencers" by Midan Marketing LLC, a Chicago market research group focused on the meat industry. Manfluencers are responsible for at least half of the grocery shopping and meal preparation for their households.

Food company executives hope more men shopping means new opportunities for foods some men have traditionally shied away from in this country, including yogurt and hard cider. The changes are often cosmetic: larger portions or darker color schemes instead of recipes on the backs of packages.

In all honesty I buy Yoplait yogurt. It's never bothered me how it was packaged or if anyone sees me buy it.

Most of the guys in my family drink hard cider whenever we get together for holidays and whatnot. Last night, for example. Bottles and bottles of apple and pear cider, and not one comment about how it was packaged, or if the packaging appealed to guys.

I've been buying food most of my life, and I buy what's in the package no matter what it looks like. As far as yogurt goes, I buy those big things of unflavored yogurt unless I make my own. And I buy what's on sale unless it's garbage.

The conditioner bottle actually reads: "Dear hair, You. Me. Girls weekend." (Punctuation is as it appears.)

They aren't going to get me to buy or not buy a product with gender-based target marketing.

Largely by domestic decree. "WTF! Hot pockets? I sent you to get whole wheat unbleached flour!"

I don't give a shit what people see me buy and I sure as hell ain't influenced by the packaging. Is it on sale? Do I have a coupon? Is it Claussen's spicy pickles? Those factors determine if it gets bought or not.

Carrageenan is used as a thickening agent in yogurt because unlike almost all other thickening agents it works at low temperatures, which means you don't kill the cultures. I just strain my yogurt to get it as thick as I want, but naturally this reduces volume which increases the cost to commercial producers.
