Mexico and U.S. search for three American sailors last seen in Sinaloa

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico's Navy and the United States are searching for three American sailors who were last seen on April 4 in the northwestern Mexican state of Sinaloa, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The three sailors reportedly left the port city of Mazatlan en route to San Diego and were due to stop in Cabo San Lucas on April 6 for provisions and to report in, but they never made it.

"There was no record of them arriving in Cabo San Lucas or a report in of their location," the U.S. Coast Guard said in a statement published late on Friday.

The Coast Guard appealed for information about the whereabouts of the three Americans, whose sailing vessel Ocean Bound was a 44-foot La Fitte, and identified them as Kerry O’Brien, Frank O’Brien, and William Gross.

According to the Coast Guard, Kerry O’Brien, Frank O’Brien and William Gross were aboard a 44-foot La Fitte sailboat named Ocean Bound. They reportedly left Mazatlan en route to San Diego.

Disturbing trend of Americans missing in Mexico grows
Search-and-rescue coordinators have contacted marinas throughout Baja, Mexico, with negative sightings of the vessel, the Coast Guard said.

The Mexican Navy, with help from the U.S. Coast Guard, is searching for three American sailors who were last heard from on April 4 traveling near Mazatlán, Mexico, to San Diego.

Kerry O'Brien, Frank O'Brien and William, also known as Bill, Gross left Mazatlán, Mexico, on the sailing vessel Ocean Bound, a 44-foot La Fitte, and had planned to stop in Cabo San Lucas on April en route to San Diego, according to the U.S. Coast Guard District 11.

No record exists of them arriving in Cabo San Lucas.

Cell phone pings on April 4, show the trio off the coast of Mazatlan calling into Cabo San Lucas presumably trying to make slip/ ball reservations, the family of Bill Gross stated. That is the last known contact of Kerry, Frank and Bill.

Bill's family stated that Kerry, Frank and Bill are all experienced sailors. Bill has over 50 years of sailing experience. Kerry and Frank have 20 years of sailing together and both hold Captain's licenses with the U.S. Coast Guard.
