"El Tony Montana" — the brother of Mexico's most wanted cartel boss "El Mencho" — is arrested by the army

The Mexican army on Tuesday arrested the brother of the country's most wanted drug cartel boss, Nemesio "El Mencho" Oseguera, the Mexico Defense Department said.

The army said it captured Antonio Oseguera in possession of weapons in a suburb of Guadalajara, the capital of the western state of Jalisco. It said he oversaw violent actions and logistics, and bought weapons and laundered money for the hyperviolent Jalisco New Generation Cartel, often known simply as the Jalisco cartel.

The U.S. Treasury Department lists Antonio Oseguera's alias as "El Tony Montana," an apparent reference to the fictional protagonist of the 1983 gangster film "Scarface." According to the Treasury Department, he served a prison sentence in the U.S. following a 1996 arrest on heroin charges "before being deported to Mexico and reengaging in drug trafficking activity."

Antonio Oseguera is on a Treasury Department sanctions list for his ties to the cartel. However, it was not immediately clear if there is a U.S. warrant of extradition request for him. The state of Jalisco was immediately put on high alert after Antonio Oseguera's arrest. In a statement, the army called the arrest a "powerful blow" to the Jalisco cartel.

News just broke that Antonio Oseguera Cervantes, alias "Tony Montana", the brother of Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, was captured and arrested.

Details About the Operation Which Arrested Him

Reforma is reporting that he was arrested in Tlajomulco de Zúñiga, Jalisco. The operation reportedly took place at dawn today, on December 20, 2022.

NTR Guadalajara is reporting that the Army (SEDENA), the National Guard and the federal Attorney General's Office (FGR) were involved in the operation.

He was allegedly arrested at 5:20 am in the morning.

NTR writes that soldiers seized six short barrel firearms, one long barrel firearm, ammo, a package of cocaine, and two vehicles during the operation which captured Tony Montana.

The National Detention Registry currently lists out Tony Montana’s status as “in transit”, or meaning he is currently being transferred. Based on the arrest procedures we’ve seen with previous capos, its likely that Tony is currently being flown out to Mexico City.

Mexico's Defense Ministry announced Tuesday that it has arrested Antonio Oseguera Cervantes, the brother of Nemesio "El Mencho" Oseguera, the leader of one of Mexico's largest drug cartels.

El Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion (Jalisco New Generation Cartel), better known by its acronym CJNG, is one of the most prolific and violent criminal organizations in Mexico and the world, with a presence throughout the Americas as well as Asia and Europe.

According to Mexico's military, Antonio Oseguera was apprehended in the state of Jalisco in Mexico's northwest in the early hours of Tuesday on charges of money laundering, acquisition of weapons in large quantities and coordination of "violent actions" against opposing groups.

The US Treasury Department had singled him out as an associate of the CJNG in charge of money laundering and international drug trafficking.

One of their members in 2015 shot down a military helicopter with a rocket-propelled grenade, and in 2020, the cartel attempted to assassinate Mexico City’s police chief, leaving three people dead.

Many people have worried that this arrest could trigger a significant amount of violence from the cartel, with Hope saying that they “wouldn’t be surprised if there was some attempt to sabotage the arrest.”

A Mexican drug lord known as Tony Montana, who was arrested this week, reportedly kept a low profile by pretending to be an office employee. Antonio Oseguera Cervantes was seized by the Mexican Army and National Guard in Jalisco on Tuesday (December 20).

Mexican authorities allege that Antonio was helping run the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) - a drug trafficking organisation led by his younger brother Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes (known as El Mencho).

El Mencho also happens to be the most wanted man in Mexico. The US government is offering $10million (£8.26m) for information leading to his arrest.

Narco tanks, also known as narco monster trucks, are vehicles that have been modified in clandestine workshops and fitted with heavy metal plating to make them bulletproof.
