MEXICO CITY (AP) Mexican authorities arrested a former governor on charges that he had a reporter who investigated his role in a pedophilia ring illegally arrested and tortured, an official said Thursday.
Interior Secretary Olga Sánchez Cordero confirmed the arrest of Mario Marín, ex-governor of Puebla, in Acapulco the previous day. On Thursday, Marín was scheduled to appear before a judge in Cancun.
Marín, of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, governed Puebla from 2005 to 2011. He was a close friend of textile magnate José Kamel Nacif, also considered a fugitive.
Journalist Lydia Cacho had reported on Maríns role as political protector of the pedophilia ring and published a book in early 2005. In December 2005, Marín sent police to arrest Cacho in Cancun and drive her to Puebla. During that 20-hour drive she was tortured.

(160,545 posts)Such a brave journalist. He has been threatening her life for years.
Anyone who has wondered how powerful Mexican right-wing politicians are has only to read this article. It's horrendous.
Excerpts:
He is the first governor arrested for acts of torture against journalists and linked, furthermore, with a ring of trafficking girls and boys, Cacho said.
. . .
The accomplices reunite again, but now in very different conditions, Cacho wrote via Twitter Thursday. Theres no more luxury parties, nor girls turned victims at the hands of the pederasts. There is no toast nor celebration. Journalism is the way toward justice.
Cacho was subject to threats for years and currently is living outside the country because she fears for her safety. She took her case to international bodies when the Mexican justice system failed to act.
. . .
A police officer convicted of torturing Cacho was sentenced and served a prison term. But there are three more police jailed awaiting sentences and four more people who are fugitives, Maldonado said.
. . .
Cacho said experts had warned her the chances of retaliation could increase with Maríns arrest, but she said Thursday she would consider her quest for justice.
Things will change if we persist, she said.

Article 19 and journalist Lydia Cacho Ribeiro welcomed the fact that the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) requested to freeze the accounts of former Governor Mario Marín Torres, businessman Kamel Nacif Borge , and former Director of the Police, Hugo Adolfo Karam Beltrán.
The three named have been at large since April last year due to the crime of torture to the detriment of Cacho Ribeiro, the international organization recalled in a press release.
She highlighted that the judicial persecution and torture against the activist and journalist were the consequence of the revelation she made of a child pornography network linked to organized criminal networks.
Together with Karam Beltrán , then Director of the Judicial Police of Puebla , the former governor and textile manufacturer have evaded the action of justice; "Three and a half months after the arrest warrants were issued , Cacho Ribeiro was attacked by a search of her home."

Thank you for sharing this information. The former Governor MUST go to prison, along with his taxpayer-funded thugs.
Deepest hopes for Lydia Cacho's survival, and safety, permanently.
