Brazil’s reviled lower house speaker Eduardo Cunha resigns in tears

Cunha, an ultra-conservative evangelical being investigated for corruption, gave a typically abrasive speech: ‘It is well known that the house is brainless’

Brazil’s lower house speaker Eduardo Cunha has resigned in tears less than three months after he orchestrated the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff.

His departure is the latest twist in the country’s ongoing political turmoil, but few are likely to lament the reviled head of a despised institution.

Cunha – an ultra-conservative evangelical – had already been suspended by the supreme court while he is investigated for alleged corruption, intimidation of lawmakers, obstruction of justice and abuse of power.

Although he has denied the charges and previously vowed to stay in his post, he has come under increasing pressure to step down. This week, his former ally in the Brazilian Democratic Movement party, interim president Michel Temer, advised him it was time to go.

Always allow your opponents to self-destruct if possible. Her job approval ratings were dismal. This circus around her impeachment pressed by people who are under investigation will likely help her.

I am well aware that the current corruption investigation into the state oil company has engulfed politicians from both the left and the right. She moved to give her predecessor immunity from potential charges. Someone who she worked for.

I am also aware that many of her opponents whi were pushing for her impeachment are also under investigation.

I was saying that given she already has dismal approval ratings her opponents would've been better off letting her sink on her own. That is always a good idea in electoral politics. Kind of like waiting for a tea party opponent so say something really stupid and then pouncing to take advantage.

Since politicians of all ideologies are under investigation from corruption I am going to take a guess that it looks a pot and kettle situation to the public

Just because I don't take the simplistic view that all leftist are good doesn't mean I don't know what I am talking about.
