2 Suspects Detained in Venezuela Linked to Murder of Ex-Officer
Published 29 May 2016 (6 hours 29 minutes ago)

The Venezuelan Interior Ministry said the government suspects far-right elements are behind the murder of a retired Venezuelan Army officer.

Venezuelan Interior Minister Gustavo Gonzalez Lopez said Sunday that two suspects in the killing of a retired Venezuelan Army Major General Felix Velasquez had been apprehended.

According to witnesses, two unidentified gunman approached the vehicle aboard a motorcycle and killed the senior military officer who was with his five-year-old granddaughter.

Gonzalez said a preliminary investigation indicated the homicide of Velasquez was a contract killing disguised as an attempted robbery.

In a series of tweets from his official account, Gonzalez said the one suspect was caught around noon Sunday, with a second apprehended around 2:00 p.m. local time.

The interior minister indicated that the suspects were hired assassins, lending credence to the theory that the alleged hit was only made too look like a robbery.
