Non-governmental organizations Venezuelan Observatory of Social Conflict (OVCS) and ConflictoVe underlined in their latest report that 28 workers or members of trade unions were killed at their work place in the first half of 2014.

The document entitled Violence at the labor-trade union environment and impunity, first half of 2014, highlights that 86% of trade union-related murders took place in the construction sector, with contract killings as the most common modus operandi against workers or trade union leaders.

The document adds that "parallel trade unions" and "sales of job positions" are the main causes of violence in the construction sector.

The coordinator of OVCS, Marco Antonio Ponce, asserted that "criminal gangs continue to hit the construction sector amidst both impunity and corruption in the Venezuelan legal system.
