Blacks accounted for 62 percent of South Carolina Democratic primary voters in exit poll results, breaking the states record, 55 percent in 2008. And Clinton won 84 percent of their votes, a crushing score.

Hillary is at 78% of the over all vote and Bernie is at 21%. With 5% reporting.

(14,556 posts)But I don't think they will. I really depends where the 5% are. There have been a few polls saying Hillary was up 50%, I did not believe it. I expect a 15-30% win.
I think where Bernie made the mistake is focusing on college students. He spoke at several colleges in the state. Sure they went to the rally. However, many college kids vote in their home state. Hillary went to the churches, held rallies, asked Clyburn to endorse (Bernie didn't even ask) she went out and met the people. Bernie left town.
12% reporting Hillary 77% Bernie 22%

(14,556 posts)think campaigning anywhere is a waste of time. He put all his eggs into one basket. If you want voters in SC you have to get invited and go to the churches. The churches GOTV among their congregation like you wouldn't believe.
MADem
(135,425 posts)hither and yon, to crowds that were heavily seeded with non-HBCU attendees (you could tell by their complexions, frankly), and it was a waste of his time and money. Hotels and meals and planes don't come cheap. He would have been better off strategically deploying some of those surrogates to GOTV the youth vote elsewhere and striking out on his own with one or two locals to hand-hold him through events and some immediate staff to whip him from venue to venue.
Problem is, I don't think either West or Belafonte do much for the youth vote these days. And I don't think they appeal to the older voters much, either--at least not the ones in SC, because neither of them have been very kind to Obama.
Killer Mike is his best asset in that "youth vote" regard, and he has niche appeal, himself.
Churches are very willing to hear from all sorts--thing is, you don't wait to be invited. If you wait, you'll be waiting all year. You have to approach the pastors, and ask, politely.
He probably didn't think it through when he attached himself at the hip to Prof. West, who has said some pretty ugly things about the sitting POTUS who is quite beloved in many corners of that state. We sort of saw that when Ben Jealous dragged him to that pot luck and he got a subdued reception. They weren't hostile, but they certainly weren't enthused to see him. It was a bit cringeworthy.
SC didn't give him (I was going to say much, but that's not accurate) ANY bang for his buck.
It just wasn't a good day for him.
I honestly didn't think he'd get what it seems like he got out of that state. I am surprised he didn't do a bit better. I believed that HRC would win, based on ground game, endorsements, the make-up of the population, the motivation of the older voting bloc, and things of that nature, but I did think BS would do better than he did.

(31,257 posts)said...."baby, Cornel has split his draws (underwear) with me". Roughly translated, it means "get the hell out of my face, cause you have really eff'd up." BS seriously miscalculated the depths of resentment toward West, and to a lesser degree...Tavis Smiley, in the AA community. Being the first black anything is & will always be a challenge, and that task is made all the harder if the other crabs in the bucket are constantly pulling you down, and CW & TS have been exceptionally horrid crabs AFAIC.

(135,425 posts)As I've said elsewhere, I don't think he spent money wisely in that state at all. I think he was burning through cash mercilessly with his "entourage" of fellows, exhorting half empty venues.
And then, there's this:

Ten offices, 240 staffers, and they couldn't bring home "a" county? Not one?

(31,257 posts)Can you imagine the GE ads if he should stumble to the nomination? They write themselves.
I mistook how you meant wasted his time. Thanks for clarifying.
I watched 37 seconds of that video, that was bad. They didn't even stop talking. Why the heck didn't Ben J give a short speech to get their attention and talk Bernie up? Then introduce Bernie.
I liked Bernie a lot more before he started to run for president. I think he finally realized what people have been saying about his inability to connect with AfAm voters. This is politics and you can't rest on your laurels. Yes, he was a great Civil rights activist and voted favorably for minority groups. He hasn't done any outreach in decades. You can't wait 3 days and then give a lackluster condemnation like he did when the faked PP videos came out. All that told me is he doesn't care enough to fight for me.
That poll that I dismissed...LOL she did win by 50%. I thought that was an outlier because most polls had her 20 to 30% ahead, with Bernie supposedly closing the gap. I have never been happier to be wrong.
MADem
(135,425 posts)240 paid staff, ten offices....that's some huge scratch right there. Then there were the ads in heavy rotation, the new one from Spike Lee--all that couldn't have been cheap.
I wonder how much each vote cost? Each delegate? I'll bet it's a lot.
I wasn't hoping for a win that big, either--I didn't dare hope. I thought like you did, that the fifty percent blowout was an outlier--but damn! What good and unexpected news!
