Videos not playing

I had a hard drive crash last month, and after all the repairs were done and all the software and backups reinstalled, almost everything is as it should be. Almost.

I am unable to view videos on DU and very few other sites using the current version of Chrome - Version 24.0.1312.52 m. I enabled all the usual video players - shockwave, flash, etc. Cookies are set as they should be. But videos on DU and a few other sites just show up as black boxes. No video, no links, no nothing. Everything is fine, as far as I can tell, in Firefox, but I have same problem with IE 9.

I can't seem to find any solutions via Google searches, other than enabling all the usual suspects.

Any ideas?

I know it's not a big deal to use another browser. I just like Chrome, and it drives me nuts that I can't sort this out. I Googled some other options, but I've done everything suggested, and still no go.

Disabled ad blocking. Made sure plug-ins are enabled. I don't think there are any conflicting extensions. Shockwave and flash up to date.

The quest continues.

Maybe try an uninstaller program like Revo or GeekUninstaller (http://www.geekuninstaller.com/) to help get rid of all traces of Chrome. Then try re-installing Chrome and see if that helps.

Some fixes listed include:

Go to Chrome's detailed Settings page/Plug-ins URL: chrome://plugins/

There are 2 Flash files listed in Plugins but Chrome disables one of them every time you close it. ENABLE both of them. It seems to be the Peppercorn Flash, located in another directory, that gets called by CNN but YouTube, etc. goes for the other one.

I was fortunate to have two identical laptops, one worked and one didn't. The one that did not play CNN videos had RealNetworks Chrome Background Extension Plug-In (32 bit) - Version 15.0.6.14 installed and enabled. I disabled this, restarted Chrome, and CNN videos are now playing.

For those who don't know, to see the chrome plugins, type about:plugins in the chrome address box.
