HP Instant ink -- printer connected and working

With wifi direct and usb plug. Right now all is working and printing fine. I just realized though because its not hooked up to regular wifi and I have tried, it is not connecting to Instant Ink to tell them my levels of ink. Obviously the ink and how many pages you use is different because I could see how many pages I have used but it says not connected for ink levels.

I am ok now but when ink runs low they are suppose to know so they can mail me more ink.

I tried unplugging usb because I read that wifi won't work if it is connected. At that point printer still worked through wifi direct but a message came on that said Instant Ink was disconnected. So they are getting some info from the usb connection but not ink.

We are thinking of upgrading our router and modem because both are old and I can get new free ones from cable company, so could older router be the problem??

I have a HP deskjet 6978.

the HP ink program thingy. I understand the money savings on the ink but it has been pretty much a pain in the ass. He does all the hooking up of our stuff and he has spent HOURS over time screwing around with the HP printer/ink. I don't have the patience. We have an OfficeJet Pro 8720. I suggest you call HP for help as they are helpful.

However, HP (by way of Google) states: HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer has been discontinued; this might (?) be affecting your printer's communications efforts with HP.

As to your router/modem; I would go for replacement; however, I would NOT-NOT-NOT let your ISP (Internet Service Provider) technician leave your home (after equipment installation) until all related devices are working properly AND are functioning to your (personal) satisfaction.

Special Note: After new equipment installation, keep written track of all passwords, both old and new (!).

And 'should be' an easy installation; however, be aware that if your telephone (landline or mobile) depends upon your router and your router is not working, then communications becomes (nearly) impossible.

Perhaps consider having a neighbor with a mobile phone nearby in the event of problems. Also, take photos of current installation (input/output and power wiring) to share with your provider BEFORE attempting new device installation.
