Related: About this forum... and so farewell Sir Patrick Alfred Caldwell-Moore ...
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2012/dec/09/astronomer-patrick-moore-dies... astronomer extraordinaire, classic English eccentric and the sartorial industry's worst nightmare!
Funny old duck and well to the right of Genghis Khan (though a better xylophone player than the Mongol warlord, I'm told) but I can forgive a man who calls his cat Ptolemy most things.
Can't help wondering what he's found up there though ...
May he sleep well.

... a timely reminder that some people truly defy stereotyping.
D'ya know, I think I'd have liked him.

While he was in hospital after an injury, his heart condition was discovered: he relinquished his commission in 1944 and took up the defusing of bombs.
Because defusing bombs is in no way stressful, or something that could go wrong if your heart plays up ...

All the great figures of my youth are dying. I was a huge fan of Patrick Moore as a kid, and wanted to become an astronomer, if not an actual spacewoman, when I grew up. I didn't, of course, but I'm still grateful to him for all the inspiration!
