(17,276 posts)If I vote early, does my vote get tabulated on election night, or is it held in reserve and added later on, only if the count is close? That's how I understand they handle absentee votes.

Greg Palast's Billionaires & Ballot Bandits (How to Steal an Election in 9 Easy Steps), on page 17, sez:
"In the 2008 election, 488,000 absentee ballots were mailed in but never counted."
That's a big enough number that Palast made it RULE NUMBER ONE of the "7 Ways to Beat Ballot Bandits" at the back of the book:
Don't Go Postal and request a mail-in absentee ballot. "When they don't count, you don't even know it," says Palast.
BUT
....Rule NUMBER TWO is --
VOTE EARLY. In person, at your municipal (city, not county) clerk's office.
The m-f'n J-S article "early voting starts today" conflates the two options. I'm not giving them the benefit of the
doubt that it's an honest mistake:

I'd say USE MR. GOOGLE and your telephone, to call and confirm ahead of time you're heading out to the right place to vote.
But don't rely on the postman, under any circumstances. (This morning on Bill Press on Current, Palast was on and said there are 'pimply faced guys with clip boards, making check marks when mailed-in ballots come in. They'll reject your vote if you're on the wrong list on the clip board. For having an envelope the wrong color. No middle initial on the return address. Anything they can think of.') That's how they eliminated almost half a million absentee ballots in 2008.
Edit Afterthought:
A disclaimer -- The BBC's crack investigative reporter, Palast, wasn't specifically addressing the situation in the City of Milwaukee, or anyplace in Wisconsin, when he made that crack about the geeks with the clip boards. But nation-wide, wherever digital Jim Crow (dual set of rules, one for R's and another for Dem's) has replaced the rule of law, that's what's been happening.

(8,510 posts)It's the exact same process. It just takes place in your municipal clerk's office (or home in rural areas).
What is better about voting absentee in person in Wisconsin is that the likelihood of mistakes that would cause your ballot to be rejected go away. I never realized until the Kloppenburg recount how many absentee ballots cannot be counted because of errors on the ballot envelope or on the ballot itself.
Absentees, whether completed in the office or received by mail are counted on election day. Now, since Palast wrote his book, federal rules require absentee votes be counted up to a certain number of days (I don't remember at the time of our primary if it was 5 days or 7 days) after election day in all federal elections.
So there have been improvements in the absentee process that protect the vote.
The book just came out a few weeks ago. Some mailed-in absentee ballots never get
counted, like you said. Most are but... in person is better.

(6,622 posts)Today started in court, with three friends who had citations from the Capitol. Two of the three people had their tickets dropped. Yay!!! Then I went to the sing along at the Capitol, which sounded particularly good today. I left my note for Scott Walker (aka, John Doe), as I do every time I'm at the Capitol. Then I went to my Town Hall, where I had the pleasure of voting for Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Tammy Baldwin, and dems all the way down the line, "Yes" to a couple of school referenda, and I was on my way! I'm now sporting my lovely "I voted early" button, and am looking forward to watching the debate tonight at our favorite watering hole.

(6,622 posts)Just go to your municipal (city/village/town) clerk's office and vote! If your voter registration needs updating for some reason, you'll have time to take care of that.
