Senate bill would push back whale watching vessels

The Washington state Senate approved a bill setting new restrictions on vessels to protect Southern Resident orcas.

The bill requires slower speeds, 7 knots per hour or less. To view the whales, a vessel must move 1,013 yards away. Current rules list viewing at 400 yards away from orcas.

Sen. Christine Rolfes, D-Bainbridge Island, sponsored SB-5577.

“We know that slowing down boats and providing a large zone where boats are absent are necessary to quiet the waters near orcas and preserve their health,” Rolfes said. “This is another key step to protect our vulnerable orca population.”

i have been on several whale watching tours. the last one was in hawaii, a few years ago.
it wasnt really the season there, but there were a few around.
the boat we were on spotted a lone cow w a calf, and chased after her. this went on for a good 20 minutes.
it turned my stomach. i will never do that again.
