Ferguson v. Trump: Judge's census ruling is AG's 18th victory
A federal judge ruled Tuesday that U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross cannot add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census, in a lawsuit brought by Washington and 17 other states, and joined by the city of Seattle.
The ruling by U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman marks the 18th time that Attorney General Bob Ferguson's office has reversed or joined in reversing a Trump administration policy. Ferguson has yet to lose.
Opponents have charged that Ross' citizenship question was designed to drive down participation in the 2020 Census, to the advantage of Republicans. One in seven Washington residents is an immigrant.
"Today's ruling is a major victory for all Washingtonians and affirmation of our values as a country," said Ferguson.
