A timely look at Washington state’s deteriorating bridges and clogged highways
Yet another report is calling attention to the woeful state of Washingtons transportation system.
Washington, D.C.-based transportation organization TRIP has released a new study highlighting needed but unfunded transportation projects of all kinds, including bridge conditions and congestion chokepoints.
About one-third of urban roadways and one-fifth of rural roads are in poor condition.
Driving on rough roads costs motorists a total of $2.9 billion each year, or $551 annually per driver.
The state Department of Transportation faces a $1.8 billion funding shortfall required to fix the roadways.
Five percent of bridges are structurally deficient. An additional 21 percent of are functionally obsolete, meaning they dont meet current design standards.
