State AG sues Albertsons, Kroger and Rite Aid over opioid epidemic

Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson is suing three national pharmacy operators over their alleged role in the over-prescription of opioids.

In a lawsuit filed last week, Ferguson's office accused Albertsons (NYSE: ACI), Kroger (NYSE: KR) and Rite Aid (NYSE: RAD) of helping to fuel the opioid epidemic in the state by ignoring regulations and knowingly oversupplying prescription drugs. From 2006 to 2021, more than 12,000 people statewide died of opioid overdoses, according to state data.

The companies operate chains such as Safeway, QFC, Fred Meyer and Bartell Drugs.

“Opioids tore apart Washington families, overburdened our health care system and caused an epidemic of addiction we are still struggling to contain,” Ferguson said in a news release.
