Compact snow, avalanche danger closes Stevens and Snoqualmie passes

High avalanche danger and hazardous driving conditions will make traveling over the Cascades passes difficult this weekend, if not impossible.

As of noon Saturday, both directions of US 2 over Stevens Pass and both directions of I-90 over Snoqualmie Pass were closed.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) said I-90 is closed from milepost 34 near North Bend to milepost 106 near Ellensburg due to freezing rain and avalanche danger.

The WSDOT said drivers should expect “an extended closure.” While there is currently no estimated time of reopening, the department said Saturday afternoon that crews will evaluate road conditions at 9 p.m. to determine if I-90 will be able to reopen Saturday night.
