Lowland rain, high avalanche danger in the Cascades Saturday
What a difference 24 hours can make. A warmer weather system will move through the region Saturday, helping erode the cold air left over from the ice storm that slammed western Washington Friday.
While the lowlands will get rain, there is a high avalanche danger in the Cascades Saturday due to heavy mixed precipitation and strong winds. The Northwest Avalanche Center issued an Avalanche Warning for Stevens Pass and the east slopes of the Cascades from Chelan to just south of I-90.
The National Weather Service (NWS) said very dangerous avalanche conditions are expected at all elevations. The Avalanche Warning is in effect until at least 4 p.m. Saturday.
The Washington State Department of Transportation said US 2 over Stevens Pass is closed in both directions from milepost 50 near Skykomish to milepost 84 at SR 207, and from Coles Corner near milepost 85 to milepost 99 on the west end of Leavenworth through Tumwater Canyon. There is no estimated time for reopening.
