New report finds progress, but thousands of backlogged rape kits remain in Washington
The Washington State Patrol (WSP) is making progress on the backlog of sexual assault kits in Washington, but thousands remain untested. That's the finding of a new report from the State Auditor's Office.
Testing these kits is essential since the forensic evidence can lead to identifying a suspect through DNA. In 2019, there was a backlog of 9,000 untested kits, and the State Legislature laid out reforms to speed up analysis. In addition to the backlog, the report says investigators receive about 2,000 new kits each year. Lawmakers set a deadline of December 2021 to have all kits sent for analysis.
WSP was not able to meet that goal. The Auditor's Office review found as of January, 6,000 kits remained untested. According to the report, that included 3,600 older kids and 2,600 newer kits.
Senior Performance Auditor Olha Bilobran was the lead auditor on the new report. She said WSP enlisted help from private labs, but the pandemic slowed everyone down.
