COVID-19 outbreak at Harborview leaves 14 infected; 1 dead

SEATTLE -- An outbreak of COVID-19 at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle has left 14 people infected with the virus, with one of them dying, hospital officials said.

Dr. John Lynch says 10 staff members at Harborview tested positive as did four other patients. One of the patients later died at the hospital, Lynch said. The patient had pre-existing conditions, but Lynch would not give any further details. The 10 staff members are recovering at home.

"It has been very clear that this virus spreads among patients and staff because in gaps in adherence to precautions that we know are very effective and that work at Harborview and other medical sites," Lynch said.

Lynch said it was at the end of September when they learned about first patient that was infected, that's when they found other employees who were positive in that same medical unit.
