'Outside of the normal': Seattle vote center quiet on Washington primary election day
People stood ready Tuesday to help register last-minute voters and answer any questions at the large event center at Seattle's CenturyLink Field. Everyone was social distancing and wearing masks. Plexiglass dividers were up and every surface was frequently sanitized to further prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
But on Tuesday morning — the day of Washington's primary election and the last day for people to get their ballots in — the one vote center in Seattle was largely empty. Voters trickled in every so often, quickly going through the process of registering to vote, or getting a new ballot, without having to wait in what has in the past been lengthy lines.
"Seeing nobody here is definitely outside of the normal," said Leland Buchanan, the vote center lead. "We were definitely expecting a larger turnout."
In Tuesday's primary election, people were casting their votes for candidates in several races, including governor, attorney general, secretary of state and U.S. representatives. The top contenders will appear on the election ballot in November. People have until 8 p.m. Tuesday to get their ballots in and ballot boxes are located all throughout King County.
