Tahoma School District provides childcare for essential workers during coronavirus crisis

Select schools across Washington state are providing childcare for children of workers on the frontlines of the coronavirus fight, such as first responders and health care workers.

Tahoma School District staff have also been providing the service for grocery and pharmacy workers at Lake Wilderness Elementary School in Maple Valley for the last two weeks.

From 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., district employees are making sure kids have activities to do; which vary from light school work to crafts and outdoor play. The staff said they are getting anywhere from 15 to 25 kids a day.

Radie Haytack is the childcare coordinator for TSD. She said a challenge is not knowing how many kids are going to show up each day, but they make it work because they know the essential workers could not do what they need to do without their support.
