Seattle's downtown movie theater Cinerama to close for renovations; concession staff laid off
The Vulcan-owned Cinerama in Seattle's Belltown neighborhood said in an announcement Tuesday it was closing for renovations until "later this year," which means no chocolate popcorn for the foreseeable future.
The post on the theater's website said it had been "operating nearly nonstop for over five years and has had over a million guests through the doors," and Vulcan spokeswoman Anna Imperati said the theater would have an overhaul of the kitchen and new carpets when it opened back up.
Cinerama did not address what would happen to its employees and if any would be compensated while the theater was closed.
"We were unable to retain concession staff, since we will be closed and unable to give staff hours over the next several months," Imperati said in an emailed statement. She also said in the statement and in a follow-up email that further information couldn't be given regarding the future of Cinerama's workers as Vulcan doesn't "discuss employment terms publicly." But she did say "we are working with impacted individuals to ease their transition."
