by Patrick Svitek, Texas TribuneState Rep. Drew Springer of Muenster prevailed over fellow Republican Shelley Luther in a special election runoff for a state Senate seat that was animated by Gov. Greg Abbott and his handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
Luther is the Dallas salon owner who was jailed earlier this year over her refusal to close her business due to coronavirus restrictions. Throughout the race, she was an outspoken critic of Abbott, who endorsed Springer in the runoff and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars of his own campaign funds to beat back Luther in the race to succeed outgoing state Sen. Pat Fallon, R-Prosper.
Abbott took to Twitter Saturday night to congratulate Springer on an "overwhelming" win.
"We look forward to working with you to secure our border, support police, protect unborn, cut taxes, safeguard 2nd Amendment rights, fund schools & open up businesses in Texas," he wrote.

Both are Republicans, but if the decision is between a veteran politician vs. a malcontent right-wing activist, then I think that Springer is the lesser of two evils.
The vote count was 32,599 to 25,146 with all precincts reported.

(26,403 posts)The Democrat came in third in the first election. Only Democrat in a field of 6 with the others being Republicans.

Texas Senate district 30 is extremely, extremely reactionary and red. The only solace here is that the QAnon candidate failed to win - though came very close originally. I wonder how many Democrats voted a second time and held their nose to minimize the craziness within the GOP.

(112,300 posts)Remember about 15 years ago when one of the GOP members literally killed all legislation about a month before the session by pulling a stunt with the calendar committee? Shelley Luther seems like a person that would pull a similar stunt if she thought it would benefit her. I'd rather have a somewhat sane Republican in office over a bomb thrower.

(26,403 posts)The Texas Lege still has many rules designed for a "sane" gentlemanly management of legislation. Unfortunately, this 19th-century sentiment does not apply today. And even more, unfortunately, I expect the GOP to change this such that they bypass the lack of super-majority they just lost.

(42,584 posts)I think there were four Republicans and one Democrat. I held a tiny sliver of hope that Republican vote-splitting might get the Democrat into the runoff. Sigh.

(3,334 posts)It was a collaborated effort to keep Luther out. Everyone knows Springer sucks ass, but the alternative was way worse.
