Texas gubernatorial hopeful Lupe Valdez fined $1k for late campaign finance filings

AUSTIN — The Texas Ethics Commission has fined Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Lupe Valdez $1,000 for correcting a report about her primary campaign's finances four months after the March election.

On Thursday, the eight-member panel that enforces state campaign-finance laws voted unanimously to follow a staff recommendation and waive or reduce penalties for late filing of corrected reports.

The motion, which passed, covered dozens of candidates and political committees, including Valdez.

Valdez, a former Dallas County sheriff, filed separate reports on July 15 and July 18 making scores of changes to contributions, expenditures and loans she'd reported in late February.
