State history class instills pride in young Texans

Do Texans really ever forget the Alamo?

Not if state educators have anything to say about it.

Public school students spend their entire year learning about the Lone Star State when they hit seventh grade. Over at Crownover Middle School, teenagers spent their Texas Independence Day on Thursday learning about Buffalo Soldiers, a group of African-American servicemen who helped protect settlers during westward expansion.

Throughout the year, history teacher Pat Dedijer has been explaining the impact of European settlers, Texas revolutionaries and Civil War soldiers on the state’s history. Dedijer, a native Texan from Odessa, notes that students who migrate to Texas find it odd to spend an entire year on the state’s history.

“They think it’s weird,” she said. “I get some kids, mostly from the northeast, who just ask, ‘Why?’”

I am in Washington state. That was also 33 years ago.
