Pennsylvania asks for REAL ID extension
Pennsylvania formally requested an extension Wednesday on the enforcement of federal REAL ID requirements that would limit the ability of residents to enter many federal buildings after Oct. 10.
As part of its request, the state included its plan to begin offering drivers licenses and ID cards in spring 2019 that meet federal Department of Homeland Security standards. The new cards, required after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, make it more difficult to create fake IDs.
The state had refused to comply with the requirement since 2005, but due Homeland Securitys threat to first limit access to federal buildings and refuse airline security clearance beginning in January 2018 unless a traveler had a valid passport, the state relented in the spring and said it would comply.
We are confident that the Department of Homeland Security will see the progress weve made and look favorably on granting an additional extension to Pennsylvania so our customers will not face access issues, Leslie Richards, state Department of Transportation secretary, said in a news release Wednesday.
