Enviros call for go-slow approach on Adirondack lands
Rick Karlin, Capitol bureau
Theres an Adirondack Park Agency meeting scheduled for Sept. 12 and 13 and while theres no indication a decision is imminent, a consortium of environmental groups wants a go-slow approach in laying out the extent of wilderness in a big part of the Finch-Pruyn Adirondack timber lands the state has and is purchasing. They say there hasnt yet been enough time to digest all the public input on how the lands should be classified.
Essentially, the environmentalists want much of the areas core to be classified as wilderness with access, meaning that there would be limited use of mechanized vehicles on the old logging roads or power boats on the lakes.
At stake is the fate of priceless natural areas, which are at risk from traffic, noise, pollution and invasive species, William C. Janeway, Executive Director of the Adirondack Council, says in a release on the issue.
Some of the local politicians, though, want more access for activities like snowmobiling or ATV use in hopes that it would help with the areas tourism.
