Is the Times' editorial board a Democratic player or protester?

Tom McGeveran

Nobody believed that The New York Times' decision not to endorse Governor Andrew Cuomo in yesterday's Democratic primary would be a deciding factor in the race. But insofar as it expressed a liberal dissatisfaction with Cuomo's record, it at least comported with the results: Zephyr Teachout and Tim Wu drew approximately 35 and 40 percent of the vote in their bids for governor and lieutenant governor, respectively, making theirs a shockingly successful protest.

But the controversial decision by the editorial board in the governor's race is one of the few in this primary that fell on the right side of history.

While the Times did not endorse Teachout, the paper did endorse Wu, who lost to Kathy Hochul. In State Senate District 34, covering parts of the Bronx and Westchester county, the Times endorsed Oliver Koppell, who lost a nasty campaign against Independent Democratic Conference leader Jeff Klein. In Queens' District 11 the Times endorsed John Liu, whose challenge to incumbent Tony Avella, another I.D.C. senator, failed.
