Mayor on body cams: ‘Pilot program for a reason’

Azi Paybarah

Bill de Blasio today defended the deliberate pace of the New York Police Department's body-camera pilot program, citing technological and logistical challenges yet to be answered.

Speaking to reporters at an unrelated event this morning, de Blasio said he and police commissioner Bill Bratton “fully believe that this pilot program is very important” and “very promising, but it’s a pilot program for a reason.”

He noted that although body-worn and dashboard-mounted cameras are used in a variety of police departments around the country, those departments “are much smaller.”
