Joan Rivers being brought out of medically induced coma as doctors begin 'waking-up process': source

BY ELI ROSENBERG , BILL HUTCHINSON

Refusing to buckle to her worst fears, Joan Rivers’ daughter is keeping her “fingers crossed” that a miracle will bring the 81-year-old comedic legend back from the brink of death.

The feisty funny lady was being brought out of a medically induced coma Sunday at Mount Sinai Hospital as her only child waited with bated breath on how she will respond.

“The waking-up process has begun and will take until Tuesday,” a source close to the family told the Daily News. “There is real concern that the part of the brain that controls motor skills may have been compromised, leaving her as either a vegetable or in a wheelchair.”

Melissa Rivers, 46, said her mother has received an outpouring of prayers and encouragement from friends and admirers around the world.

I wonder if that vasovagal reflex thing that got GW Bush with the pretzel was involved in this unfortunate incident.

Past a certain age, it's a good idea to have these things done at a full fledged hospital, I think.

I sincerely doubt doing that in a hospital is an option.

I've had quite a few surgeries lately and each time the anesthesiologists asks me if I have Laryngospasms. Thye told me it could be dangerous if they are not aware of it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laryngospasm

I'd never heard of that--it sounds like something that people do need to watch out for...

It started out of the blue one day and thought I was going to die. No ability to inhale at all.
Over the years doctors could never tell me what was causing it. One thing I did figure out is to exhale and that opened up my trachea enabling me to breath.
Alway easy to exhale even when inhaling was impossible.
For whatever reason, this after 15 years of dealing with this problem, went away.
I don't have any idea why I started having it or why it went away but I'm thrilled it has.
