Hannah's Law in gov's hands
By TIFFANY BROOKS
The Senate and Assembly have passed Hannah's law (S.2287-a/A.00490-a), named after an eight-year-old who suffers from a fatal inflammatory condition.
The legislation is named after eight-year-old Hannah Devane of Yorktown, who suffers from eosinophilic esophagitis, a condition in which white blood cells build up in her esophagus making it impossible for her to eat most foods.
The bill would amend an insurance law requiring certain health insurance policies to include coverage for the cost of enteral formulas for the treatment of eosinophilic esophagitis and related eosinphilic disorders.
First introduced in 2008 by Sen. Greg Ball, R-Patterson, when he was an assemblyman, the bill passed the Senate last May but never made it out of the Assembly Insurance Committee. The bill has finally passed both houses and is on the governor's desk.
