New law prompts MDOT to lower weight limits

A new law has the Mississippi Department of Transportation caught between 80,000 pounds and a hard place.

Gov. Phil Bryant signed SB 2418 on March 27, which allows certain trucks to haul more cargo without facing a fine. For MDOT, it means the side effect of a higher maximum weight.

The Mississippi Legislature approved increasing the tolerance for harvest weight limits from 5 to 10 percent.

Previously, posted weight limits accounted for trucks potentially 5 percent over their weight limit in harvest.
