BROCKTON – City and other officials – from state and local police to the FBI – assured residents on Wednesday they are doing all they can to stem a spike of gun and violent crimes, but they need the public’s help.

City Councilors Timothy Cruise and Thomas Monahan called for the emergency meeting on Monday, the sixth consecutive day of gunfire where police recovered 74 shell casings from eight shootings.

After listening to more than an hour of commentary – from Mayor Bill Carpenter, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz and representatives of federal law enforcement agencies like the ATF, some residents said talk is cheap.

“What you are doing isn’t working,” said Jeanne Holmes, unable to hide her frustration.

Wednesday’s meeting was identical to one in June, she said: “You should have brought us a new plan.”
