Legislature writes health care executive order into law

The Kansas Legislature on Thursday agreed to write into law the governor’s executive orders intended to relieve hospitals and nursing homes struggling with staffing shortages as COVID-19 rages again with the spread of a new variant.

The House and Senate overwhelmingly passed a bill giving hospitals and nursing homes more flexibility to use staffers to treat and test Kansans who are coming down with COVID-19 in increasing numbers.

The bill passed the Senate on 36-2 vote. It passed the House 96-4.

The bill allows nursing staff with an inactive or lapsed license to provide medical services appropriate to their education, training and experience levels, which increases the staffing available for patient care.

Students enrolled in programs to become healthcare professionals and emergency medical personnel in the military also could volunteer at healthcare facilities under the legislation sent to the governor.
