Kim Reynolds didn't disclose tech payment while a senator, highlighting flaws in Iowa's vague report
As an Iowa state senator in 2010, Gov. Kim Reynolds failed to report that she had been paid by a West Des Moines company that landed a nearly $500,000 annual government contract, newly disclosed tax records show.
The nondisclosure has drawn some criticism from the governor's political opponents, but it's a filing mistake that also has tripped up some Democrats.
The financial disclosure form Iowa lawmakers use is so poorly written and requires such profoundly vague information that it renders the information virtually useless, multiple Democrats said.
That form instructs lawmakers to describe the nature of their business associations in broad categories such as "salesperson." It doesn't require the specific names of the businesses or disclose finances beyond acknowledging receipt of $1,000 or more by a source made under a general description.
