This nice letter was in today's Dubuque TH;
Dubuque was a great town to grow up in, but now it is not safe to walk or even drive most any street in town. If you do, you are putting your life in danger. It's not just the North End, these things are happening all over Dubuque. Dubuque had better wake up soon, before it becomes a "Little Chicago." The powers that be should gather up all the gang members, thugs and anyone who keeps breaking the law, and run them all out of town, like the old West days. Make it clear that they should not return, tell them they are not welcome here.
What is it going to take before something is done with these troublemakers, a gun war on Central Avenue? Bystanders being killed or injured? I hope not. I am not targeting blacks, Hispanics, or any other ethnic groups -- there are many good hard-working people in all of these minority groups -- just the bums who don't know how to work and let the taxpayers pay their way.
Ugh. Why do I have the feeling that this person would be perfectly happy if the city became a sundown town again?

(711 posts)This person seems to be one who likes the old West, when countryside was open and it took days to ride your horse to the next town. I wonder how much they would love the "old West" when it comes to other things, like healthcare (if they could find it), or jobs (if they weren't farmers or ranchers), or especially gun control:
"...Pioneer publications show Old West leaders repeatedly arguing in favor of gun control. City leaders in the old cattle towns knew from experience what some Americans today don't want to believe: a town which allows easy access to guns invites trouble."... https://www.ndsu.edu/pubweb/~rcollins/scholarship/guns.html
I would be willing to bet that then they would be taking a "different" view!
(BTW, that wasn't a hard search on DuckDuckGo)
