Buttigieg veto survives South Bend council

SOUTH BEND — An anti-abortion rights group lost another battle Monday in its effort to open a new location next to a proposed abortion clinic, when the common council failed to override Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s veto.

All nine council members stuck to their votes cast at the April 23 meeting, when they approved a rezoning sought by Women’s Care Center. The resulting 5-4 tally fell a vote short of the two-thirds majority needed for an override.

Like they had at previous council meetings, Women’s Care Center supporters wore pink ribbons, packed the room and overflowed into the lobby, despite there being no public comment allowed at the meeting.

Voting against the rezoning April 23, and holding firm in their votes against the override, were council members Tim Scott, D-1st, in whose district the two properties lie; Regina Williams-Preston, D-2nd, whose district borders the sites; Sharon McBride, D-3rd, and Karen White, D-at large.
