That little "receipt" that prints out when you check in at the polls

We voted on Thursday in very red Marion County and after checking in at the main table, a little piece of paper printed out with "DEM" in the upper left hand corner. I did not see where the woman put it, does anyone know what they do with these little receipts? And Why does it need to say my political affiliation on it?
