DC Heat Index 98, So Hot The Mayor Has Enacted *The HEAT EMERGENCY PLAN*

(WUSA9) WASHINGTON – The mayor of Washington D.C. activated the summer “Heat Emergency Plan” on Wednesday afternoon as temperatures climbed into the 90s.

According to a release, the expected highs for the day had an index value was as high as 98 degrees.

Once the temperature or heat index in D.C. hits 95 degrees, the “Heat Emergency Plan" activates, which provides cooling centers for residents to get out of the heat.

There are cooling centers in publicly accessible government facilities, homeless shelters, and senior citizen wellness centers.

The cooling centers stay open until 6 p.m. or “until it has been deemed safe to be outdoors,” officials said.

You can request a ride to a cooling center if you are experiencing homelessness by calling (202) 399-7093.
