Just got estimates for new HVAC equipment from the same local company... one that works with Energize Delaware a lot. The guy who came for me had just come from the President's house.

I have an AC unit (central air) and a natural gas furnace. The AC unit leaks and has been patched together the last couple years. I figured I'd look into new equipment with the new rebates (thanks to President Biden). Leaning towards a Bosch heat pump with a natural gas backup. Also leaning towards replacing gas water heater with a heat pump water heater. The rebates on the water heater are AMAZING. It will end up being cheaper than some crap off the shelf at Home Depot!

1. Do you have to pay up front and the installer reimburses you?

Are all these rebates even available yet? They’re not in my state but it being a bassackwards red state may be why (NC). I need a new heat pump and am waiting for the damn state to work with EPA to get the rebate system set up. I thought that these were not available until Fall 2023 or Spring 2024. BUT -you’re being in POTUS’s home state - maybe they got it done immediately.

2. A lot is being worked out

I got 2 estimates today... The guy from the first company said that all the details are still being worked out but that I would "probably" qualify for rebates if I went for high-end equipment. The second guy (the President's guy) knew about all of the state, local, and federal rebates... And said they would work with me to make sure they all got done properly. They seem like the better company but I am researching Bosch v Daikin heat pumps. The President's company uses Bosch, the other uses Daikin. Just starting my research but the dakin is apparently more advanced. That company was a few thousand dollars more than the Bosch company. So.... still researching. I may see if Daikin is an option with the better company. That would be ideal. I think I'd be on my own trying to figure out the rebates and stuff with the first guy.

Edit to add: The Daikin apparently is almost bulletproof and has a 12 year warranty (v. 10 for Bosch... which is also not as comprehensive).

Edited again to answer question: the good company said that the state and local rebates happen quickly. The federal tax credit comes at tax time. But everything is out of pocket up front. That's how it was with my solar panels... 12k out of pocket, got 6k back from the state after a couple months, then got 30% off of that at tax time. So it ended up being 4K when all was said and done. One of the best purchases I've ever made.

3. One of my Heat pumps has been on life support for a couple of years and never sure if it will

make it through our AZ summers -- HOT! After your article I might just bite the bullet and replace it even though its working -- if I can get rebates you talk about. Where do I find this info for AZ?

Energize Delaware... I would hope! I did a quick Google search and found a company that sounds like my good one... they help guide you through the rebates & credits to make sure you save as much as possible. I'm going to try to take advantage of several of the options the IRA offers... the water heater, maybe an induction stove to replace gas stove, etc. Lots of good stuff. But I'd check out a few companies near you and see what they say. Some don't appear to care about energy efficiency and just want to sell you a bunch of crap... TODAY!... while others recognize the importance of efficiency and will work with you to get it at a reasonable price. The link I found:

From talking to the salesmen today, I got the feeling that the guidelines are out there and that they are moving forward with installs. NC seems to be waiting for more guidance from DC. I hope my people know what they're talking about and don't get me to buy something that doesn't qualify!

TBH, though, much of the rebates they told me about were local and state. Maybe those guidelines are clearer (even though I guess some of the funding comes from the IRA). I think, in my case, a 2k federal tax credit (for the heat pump) is the max I could expect.

Hopefully it will all be spelled out clearly for everyone in all states so we can hop on and take advantage of this

7. A friend got a Bosch heat pump. It's fricking silent.

Can’t even tell when it’s running. Not the inside or outside unit. When mine craps out I’m going to look into getting the same one he has. The compressor is right outside my bedroom window. Quieter would be nice.
