Big Sur fire acreage increases to 132,069 acres

The new number reflects islands and fingers of unburned forest and includes all land within the fire perimeter.

While the fire is 92 percent contained, the blaze continues to be active in the Church Ranch area between Pine Valley and the Tassajara drainage. In recent days, smoke popped up in some parts of the fire that had been cold for several weeks as winds blew through canyons and fanned hot spots.

The blaze, which started July 22 in Garrapata State Park from an illegal, unattended campfire, is expected to be contained by Oct. 15. There are 1,162 personnel fighting the fire.

Fire officials will hold a community meeting at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Arroyo Seco Fire Station, 46700 Arroyo Seco Road. Representatives from managing agencies and cooperators of the fire will provide an update on the Soberanes Fire and answer questions.
