I realize that everyone does their vacation photos this way (myself included), but to me it just doesn't do justice to the portrait or the landscape so I try to keep those two types of photography separate. A touch of fill flash on your wife would have done wonders for this photo. Many people don't think about using their flash during the day, but for portraits it can make a big difference, especially if the subject is in the shade and the background is brightly lit. As far as just the framing goes it isn't bad. I probably would have moved the frame just a touch more to the left, but otherwise it looks fine.

IMHO, the person should be farther right, for a couple of reasons--you want the view to be highlighted a bit more, and there isn't anything very interesting to the right of the of the person. Her face is shadowed anyway, so you would not want her to be in the center and the focal point of the shot. Barely off center like it is doesn't work for me, particularly since it is mostly wasted space to the right.

I agree that a flash would have made this an entirely different photo. This just depends on what you were going for. If you were going for a moody type photo, the flash wouldn't have been a good idea. But if you wanted to highlight the face, it's the right option. Or, you could try one of each and just see which you liked.

This is just me, but I think the photo has a bit too much blue in it. I would have used photo processing to tone that down. I am sure a lot of people here would disagree, however.

Changed the white balance, brought up the fill light, changed the exposure and cropped in tighter to get rid of the distractions on the right.

To what everyone else said. A step to the right would have eliminated all the unnecessary people to the right, yes it would have placed the flagpole sticking out of her head but 10 seconds of PS deals with that. Aside from that and the lighting issues I'm afraid I'm not a big fan of someone's chin in a wading pool of chardonnay plus the rim of the glass isn't helping things either, but that's me.

I "know" the woman is holding the glass but the position of the hand bothers me for some reason; msaybe because it makes the glass, not the person the focus of the photo. I do like the darkness of the photo. It sets a mood that the brightened one doesn't.

Where was this taken? It looks very much like Willmington NC on the boardwalk of the Fear River.

(woman more to the right, the glass lowered or held out to the left of her, I like the dark face actually since it's not really a portrait, so the landscape also gets play, everything to the right of the head is unnecessary) but nobody mentioned the fabulous light on the wine.

If you cropped just the wine and the hands, to just under the teeth and lip, into a square, then you have my favorite part framed just right. The light on the wine makes it a photo that could sell the stuff. I mean it.
