Some thoughts on Photo Contests and a Poll

Over the last year we've had several discussions about the contests and various aspects of them. We've toyed with the idea of reducing the voting time frame (which we did for March). We've put up threads in both GD and The Lounge recruiting participants. We've had a contest that allowed photographers to submit a second entry--after running submissions for some time. The participation in contests continues to dwindle.

Recently I was chatting (on-line) with another DU photographer about the contests and he suggested that perhaps we have too many of them. Personally, I love them and think the Photo Group is just about the best part of DU. No, that's too qualified: the Photo group is the best part of DU. I look forward to the contests, but I wonder if we ought to scale back?

It would be easy to drop four contests by only having one/month. In March, June, September, and December, the seasonal contest run in each of those months (Winter, Spring, Summer, Autumn) would be the ONLY contest that month.

We could have the following schedule:

The winner of May would skip to hosting July;
the winner of August would skip to hosting October;
the winner of November would skip to hosting January;
and the winner of February would skip to hosting April.

We would then have eight contests where the host gets to choose a theme and four seasonal contests.

The full calendar would look like this:

January: Theme contest hosted by November winner --winner of January hosts February
February: Theme contest hosted by January winner--winner of February hosts April
March: WINTER Seasonal contest hosted by Autumn seasonal winner--winner hosts SPRING contest in June
April: Theme contest--hosted by February winner--and the April winner hosts May
May: Theme contest hosted by April winner--and the winner of May hosts July
June: SPRING Seasonal contest hosted by winner of WINTER contest--winner hosts SUMMER contest in September
July: Theme contest hosted by May winner--the winner hosts August
August: Theme contest hosted by winner of July--and the winner hosts October
September: SUMMER Seasonal contest hosted by winner of SPRING contest--the winner hosts AUTUMN contest in December
October: Theme contest hosted by winner of August--winner hosts November
November: Theme contest hosted by winner of October--winner hosts January.
December: AUTUMN Seasonal contest hosted by winner of SUMMER contest-- winner hosts WINTER contest in March.

What think you, photographers? I'm going to leave the poll up for the month of April and let people think about this. If people are in favor any of the ideas, we could start a new schedule with the winner of May.

Here's the poll

When entries are low, hosts should have the option to allow two entries each. alfredo Mar 2017 #1

Participation seems to ebb and flow.
Sometimes many entries, sometimes few. It is all good.

The seasonal contest was started because so many ask for seasonal on the monthly contest. At that time spots filled up fast and people missed out. I have a feeling there are as many reasons why people are not entering as much as there are people. I haven't even been taking the camera out for a variety of reasons though am getting a bit better with the phones camera.
Anyway, good ideas and if things change we can unpin the old rules and let them drop and replace them with the news easy enough.

Possibly we should go ahead and declare May winner will run July contest? June would be dedicated to the SPRING seasonal contest?

the votes seem clear enough, and it's now only a matter of calling it officially. Onward and Upward. I'm glad you addressed this issue and thought it through so thoroughly.
