Related: About this forumStop me before I post again :) I got enamored with “steps” in Savannah this evening
Going down to the river in Savannah almost always necessitates taking ancient steps, that are labeled to be historic - and you are on your own using them
I took an hour walk today, and other than the step photos I got to obsess about a second thing, and that is the absence of tourists, and therefore economic well being. All the clothes you see in two photos here were 50 percent off. Store wide. I realize it is off season, but not to the degree I saw today. I kept thinking that this is the America the Top Deplorable, AKA the Donald, wants to make great again. It surely wont happen with more tax cuts to the rich and with enlarging the money spent on the military etc. etc.
I may post the photos illustrating my secondary thoughts, in the meantime, I hope you like the ones with steps.
Thanks everyone, you have been good sports and have given me kudos and feedback while I was hogging the posting.
Im probably not through, but I will be home tomorrow, and real life awaits.

(61,107 posts)Coming back up from the river is very different. And most of those steps are narrow or until not uniform.
Nice shots.

(32,441 posts)My favorite of your shots is the second one: steps, stones, steel (or iron?).

(22,517 posts)I had little time, and lots to do. LOL.
I also packed dinner into that time, having to send the first one back because I was dripping from my nose and my eyes were running from the "hottest" she crab soup ever. Tasty, but inedible to me.
I stayed with crab. And got dip.
Also talked to some visiting Germans at the next table (the only other patrons) - I have taken to mumbling under my breath in German, as I pass them by, "no matter where I go there are Germans, we're taking over, aren't we?" The reactions I get are hilarious. And varied 90 percent good.
but will not be telling my mother about all the stairs since I was hoping the next time I drive her down to visit the sister & brother I was hoping to stop for a day or two. The stairs would be a no go for her. We decided not to stop last summer. I think it had to do with it raining every day we were in Florida. I have been really enjoying your travels. There is no such things as posting too many photos.

(16,953 posts)spent a week there this past July....hot! Beautiful city, easily walkable from where we stayed. More tourists since it was summer....but not crowded.

(9,474 posts)I had the best of all worlds when I was stationed at the Navy Hospital in Beaufort, SC, as it is beautiful and 1/2 way between Charleston and Savannah. If you haven't been to Beaufort, you owe it to yourself to go.

(34,582 posts)all excellent. I hope to get a DSLR soon (I shot a Minolta SLR in high school about 30 years ago), and hopefully I will have the time to get a quarter as good as you.

(363 posts)These are steps that go down from the "cotton factor" offices down to the docks and warehouse.
The cotton factors were the middlemen between the cotton growers and the buyers and shippers. They would meet on the street level floor offices and then cotton was stored at the lower levels and then loaded onto the ships at the docks. Those docks aren't in use anymore, but it is fun to watch the large container ships that come up the Savannah River to the modern docks. Savannah is still a major port.

(8,217 posts)the many bars on the riverfront, careful y'all.
I love these! I lived in GA for most of my long life and visited Savannah often. Coincidentally, the one photo of mine that won 1st prize--in the only arts and crafts fair I ever entered--is called "Steps." It was taken at Ft. Pulaski, b/t Savannah and Tybee Island.
As you can see from the number of posts, I'm a newbie, here; just joined yesterday after lurking for a couple of months. I just found this forum a few minutes ago and gravitated right to your post. I'm so new that I don't know how to upload pics. Many of mine are in private folders on Google Drive, but I don't know how to send you and invitation.
I'd love to see more of your work, and I think you might enjoy some of mine, which go back well over a half century. If nothing else, I'm delighted to have seen these!

(22,517 posts)Thanks for liking them and responding to my photos.
Congrats on your 1st prize
For starters look around the top posts in our forum that are permanently pinned to the top. There is one on how to upload photos. Since I can do it, it must be easy.
Find one photo you like, and figure it out, use "preview" before you post to spare yourself disappointments, I use photobucket. It is free. So if you create an account there and have uploaded the photo then use the second from the top link, copy it and insert it in a post to introduce yourself to us.
It's only a little nerve wracking the first time.
Again, welcome. We are a bunch of good and inclusive folks, one of the nicest on DU.
